Bertha was found living with Jacob on Whidbey island in the 1920 Federal Census. her age is listed as 61 (as of Jan 1920). Both of her parents were born in Germany. Most of the Hoppenworths in Germany today are in the region around Hanover.

According to the 1880 MI census, both her parents were born in Bavaria.
